Q: Having recently painted over previously painted wall papered walls, firstly I painted two coats of white emulsion on top as there was a dark colour underneath which was vinyl silk, then put on one coat of almond white which was matt, but then changed our mind and painted on two coats of soft cream matt finish. Of all coats of paint that were applied all have cracked. Please could you tell me why this would happen. - Mark

A: It could be a number of things - possibly the wallpaper is absorbing your paint, causing it to dry too quickly. If that seems likely, try applying some kind of primer or barrier layer to the wall. If you're using 'value' paint you might want to try a thicker, higher quality emulsion. Additionaly, make sure you left enough drying time between coats (especially if your house is overly damp).
